the rejection was based on the host; i guess it was a failed reverse
DNS lookup for 199.181.141.25, as it was the first attempt by
mailgate.wizvax.net [199.181.141.25] to deliver mail; the subsequent
deliveries succeeded, presumably because the DNS info finally showed
up. i hadn't yet changed the boolean flag in the call to
verify_check_host from TRUE to FALSE (which i'd done on the two
systems i'd converted to 1.70.)

from mainlog, we see that the first delivery attempt from
199.181.141.25 is rejected; and the second one succeeds; i've
omitted the other successful ones that followed, as they're all
pretty much the same:
