Have you changed any of your libraries or your kernel since compiling the
previous exim?
Are you using the same Local/Makefile for both this and the old version of
exim?
In particular are you sure you are using the same DB library?
[some recent kernel changes have broken locking if you use a 2.1.x series
kernel].
