If all you want to do is verify the addresses then yes Exim is pretty
good/easy to use in this respect in contrast to sendmail. You could have
exim compiled up and call it from scripts etc. to do this without
touching/effecting the use of sendmail on the machine. On the whole though,
the idea of exim is to run as a complete replacement for sendmail with
performance and ease of configuration being the reasons there are so many
of us doing so ...
