So does Exim! That is why, when looked at from outside, you got

because Exim just gave up. I can see that (a) writing the message down
the SMTP channel isn't sensible and (b) it might be nicer to close down
the call tidily. I have made a note to see if I can arrange things
better in this circumstance. Thanks for the report.
