The current version of Exim relies on the system timeout for
connections (it just calls the connect() function, which gives a timeout
return eventually). Your system seems to have a long one - my system's
default is around 3.5 minutes.
The next release of Exim has a new option that allows you to set your
own connection timeout, but this cannot be longer than whatever
connect() uses by default if it is to have any effect.
