Thats not actually what I meant. My own view is I don't care what
the defaults are because I can (and probably will) always override
them. When I maintained smail, the suggested default locations were
not at all similar to the set I used on my own systems! [Ian Jackson
and I did however add a set of suggested Linux locations - which are
pretty much what I did use on Linux]

Frankly, as long as the documentation is adequate, this is a
non-problem.

People producing binary packages for specific systems will of course
mangle things as they see fit - all well and good!

How come the relatively minor things always seem to geberate the most
traffic :-)
