Perhaps I'm missing something, but is anyone else concerned about retry
times in Exim?
>From our current "configure" file on the machine in question:
######################################################################
# RETRY CONFIGURATION #
######################################################################
# The default retry rule applies to all domains and all errors. It specifies
# retries every 15 minutes for 2 hours, then increasing retry intervals,
# starting at 2 hours and increasing each time by a factor of 1.5, up to 16
# hours, then retries every 8 hours until 4 days have passed since the first
# failed delivery.
# Domain Error Retries
# ------ ----- -------
# (The following list comes from the file conf.retry)
pdg.co.za * F,14d,24h
*.pdg.co.za * F,14d,24h
bots.hnr.com * F,14d,24h
*.bots.hnr.com * F,14d,24h
chain.iafrica.com * F,14d,24h
iafrica.com * F,5m,30s; F,4h,5m; G,16h,30m,1.5; F,10d,8h
*.iafrica.com * F,5m,30s; F,4h,5m; G,16h,30m,1.5; F,10d,8h
* * F,2h,15m; G,16h,2h,1.5; F,4d,8h
end
So the catchall "*" entry at the end seems to compare well with the
original comment "retry every 15 minutes for 2 hours"
However, examining the log file for a particular message:
[kave] /var/spool/exim/log # grep 0utwHa-0002XK-00 mainlog
1996-08-23 15:29:04 0utwHa-0002XK-00 <= execpers@??? H=196-7-124-198.iafrica.com [196.7.124.198] P=smtp S=41223

[kave] /var/spool/exim/log # date
Fri Aug 23 22:30:45 SAT 1996
It hasn't been submitted even once since the initial deferment....
Just for info, the O/S info is as follows:
[kave] /var/spool/exim/log # uname -a
FreeBSD kave.iafrica.com 2.1.5-RELEASE FreeBSD 2.1.5-RELEASE #0: Sun Jul 14 07:21:08 1996 jhay@???:/usr/src/sys/compile/GENERIC i386
Having said all that, I just manually delivered the message with an
exim -d1 -M 0utwHa-0002XK-00
which yielded:
Debug level set to 1
delivering message 0utwHa-0002XK-00
