I have seen telnet implementation which lose the first line or so
when connecting to things in line mode - especially if the other end
is not handling telnet options. Is this whats happening here....?
[no I don't know why this happened, but if I remember rightly telnet
from NeXT systems to some boxes sometimes lost the first line]
