It's unclear also to me why tls_in is needed at all. The underlying elements
being introduced to em_globals.c was way back in 3.20 (Nov. 2000). Possibly
code rearrangement since then makes it not needed; a build with it commented
out works for me. Could you try that with your toolchain?
