When you say "WORKSFORME", I take it you didn't bother to compile the exim
source with -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 and run it for a couple of days receiving mail
to find out where exim is playing fast and loose with the stack.

My bizarre compiler is gcc 10.3.0. Clearly outlandish.
