This can be reduced to:

$ printf '%s\n%s\n' '/_[a-z]+_*[a-z]+/' '_aa' | pcre2test -jit
PCRE2 version 10.35 2020-05-09
/_[a-z]+_*[a-z]+/
_aa
No match

Bisecting the source tree identified this commit that introduced the bug:
