I've just had a quick look, and your examples do both work in PCRE2. I will
look more closely once I have finished a largeish update that is currently in
progress, but I suspect the answer is going to be "fixed in PCRE2; won't fix in
PCRE1 because this is exactly the kind of tricky reference issue for which
PCRE2 was refactored".
