You will be pleased to learn that I have fixed this issue, I think. I've hacked
together some C++ code that seems to work, and I have updated the C++ unit
tests as well. Also fixed was a different bug that was ignoring the setting of
UTF8 support. Both bugs go back many, many years! The patches are available
from this bug report, and I have also committed them to the SVN repository.
Given that this issue is not minor, I will probably issue an 8.43 release at
some point.

It would be good to have my patch tested by someone else, as I am not a C++
programmer and the code is very much a hack.
