For background: I work on the Hyperscan regular expression matcher at Intel,
and we test our parser against PCRE as part of our regression testing.
This particular pattern is a reduced version of an existing expression syntax
test, and we spotted this change in behaviour when we updated the version of
PCRE that we test against.
