Also, it might be worth making it so Exim can use Proxy Protocol in client mode
too in the SMTP transport. E.g:

  remote_smtp:
      driver = smtp
      proxy_protocol_hosts = +smarthost_ip
      proxy_protocol_ip    = $sender_host_address
