I had this problem once years ago. The DNS lookups went in an endless
loop tell it timed out due to server misconfiguration and the company
in charge of the pools were clueless. Are you running your own DNS
server? Is it up to date with patches etc? Also, if your running
your own DNS server you could add your own reverse DNS records for
that subnet for use LOCALLY ONLY. Or just tell named its authoritive
but there just are no records.

Also, if your not running your own DNS server and do not want to start
try a different DNS server. Perhaps a different one wont take 30
seconds to time out.
