Well *any* MTA has benefited from CPU and storage that have grown cheaper/faster
than 'last mile' bandwidth has (since the dot-bomb bubble burst, anyway)
But I don't believe Exim ever really was at 'real world' disadvantage.
Long before you put a gadzillion accounts on one server it makes sense to split
them up. No MTA can guarantee there will never be a PS, System Board, or HDD
failure - let alone a need for maintenance.
