What \ does in Exim is to preserve the incoming domain. If you don't use
the \, Exim qualifies the local part with $qualify_recipient. If you are
only handling one domain, there is no difference. You can also force the
effect of \ by setting qualify_preserve_domain. See section 22.5 of the
manual.
