I guess I'm dense. In the log snippet Axel posted, both messages
have the same sender domain (bounce2.pobox.com) and the same sending
host (208.210.124.73). One was rejected, one wasn't. Seems like
either the SPF records authorize this host for that domain, or they
don't. Why are these two messages treated differently?
