[exim] Authenticated SMTP and PAM

Hi has anybody written a howto on using authenticated SMTP with pam. I
am really struggling to make it work. Whenever I try to send an email
the log says


2004-12-15 12:46:50 login authenticator failed for diss-83-115.lut.ac.uk
(xpccrjm1) [131.231.83.115] I=[82.9.37.111]:25: 535 Incorrect
authentication data (set_id=ron)

I have tried bot plain and login authenticators, the config for them is
begin authenticators

plain:
driver=plaintext
public_name=PLAIN
server_prompts=:
server_condition=${if pam{$2:${sg{$3}{:}{::}}}{yes}{no}}
server_set_id = $2

login:
driver=plaintext
public_name=LOGIN
server_prompts = Username:: : Password::
server_condition = ${if pam{$1:${sg{$2}{:}{::}}}{yes}{no}}
server_set_id = $1
