//firstly get the source, put it somewhere to build, unpack it, create a
config file (Makefile)

mv exim-<version>.tar.gz /usr/local/src
cd /usr/local/src
tar zxvf exim-<version>.tar.gz
cd exim-<version>
cp src/EDITME Local/Makefile

//now edit the Makefile
vi Local/Makefile

//read all the comments carefully, and set things how you want them. I
usually put exim in /usr/local/exim, but you are free to do what you please.

//after you have saved the Makefile..

make
make install



This should get you started. It would pay to read all the documentation
that comes with exim first aswell.

ps of course there may be prebuilt packages for your linux distro.
Install them and all you have to to is configure.
