I've used Exim on FreeBSD. It works fine.

However, quad-xeon is overkill for Exim. Exim is IO bound and not CPU
bound. Instead of wasting money on quad-xeon get some better disks. Of
course, if you are doing spam/anti-virus/whatever to all you mail this
may require CPU time depending on how your mail is structured.
