So you have your name server publishing a PTR for this non-routable-space
IP, and restricting the answers to your particular 10.xxx subnet, and have
arranged for your resolvers to look to your name server for the answer.

Would it be easier to install the appropriate line(s) into /etc/hosts on the
Exim machine? (We do a little of both.)

Look in sample exim_mainlog. If there is an H=real.domain.example sort of
entry between the MAIL FROM: address and the [1.2.3.4] part (and you haven't
customized your log entries too much), then you are resolving hosts in
general.

Above qualified by the fact that I don't speak Solaris, but I see you
haven't had a better answer yet, so I'll jump in.
