it everything fails, you could try and capture this traffic
via tcpdump. Stop the exim daemon so that it does not
send other mails to this machine, start

        tcpdump -s0 -wsmtp.cap host 1.2.3.4 and port smtp

then dequeue/unfreeze/... that single message. You can then have
a look at this dump (file smtp.cap) with ethereal/ngrep/tcpdump -r..

And no, I would not be surprised if it's another stupid mis-feature
of M-Sexchange.
