OK. In the config file I have:

system_aliases:
driver = redirect
domains = +local_domains
allow_fail
allow_defer
data = ${lookup{$local_part}lsearch{/etc/aliases}}
# user = exim
file_transport = address_file
pipe_transport = address_pipe


and /etc/aliases I have the line:

abuse: G.Ross@???

If I do a "-bt abuse@???" I see nothing about abuse being handled as an alias.
