Yes, that was it exactly.
What had confounded me was the fact that it worked when using the
procmail "-d" option; if exim was not running as root, then how could its
child process (procmail) set uid to the local user?
The answer was that procmail *was* installed SUID root (by
default, on a Mandrake 9.0 system). Heh!
