We had this exact same problem when we moved our new email
server into our DMZ and it turned out that we weren't allowing the
AUTH service through.
I noticed when connecting (even with telnet) it took ages, a netstat -
tn on the Linux box showed an outgoing Auth connection.
Once I allowed this traffic, everything was ok.
