The system running sendmail (professor-x) does not allow whichever
worstation this is from to send mail through that server.

This is not an exim problem but a sendmail configuration issue. Make sure
that the IP address of your workstation running exim is included in the
sendmail boxes allowed list (usually /etc/mail/relay-domains or whatever
is specified in the FR-o line of the sendmail.cf)
