Isn't it usually possible to insert this into your slapd.conf (or
whatever the LDAP server config file you use is) as a configuration
option for the server???

From the UMICH slapd documentation (for v3.3):

sizelimit <integer>
        This option specifies the maximum number of entries to return
        from a search operation
        Default:
                sizelimit 500


I realise this may not be the best way to do things but it certainly
cuts down (a) the load on the server when someone makes a wildcard
search, and (b) the amount of work Exim has to do sifting the results!
