I can see your point but have to disagree. Our experience is that using
ETRN together with a configured "smart host" works very well. It takes away
the minefield of possible bear traps that UUCP version differemces, reply
addresses, return routes etc., can bring.

We supply a perl script that will telnet to the smart host and issue the
correct SMTP commands to fire up a connection using ETRN.
